ORTHODONTICS

Modern orthodontics deals not only with straightening teeth but also with preventing the stomatognathic system defects in children as well as adults. Orthodontic treatment makes it also possible to improve the aesthetic quality of one’s smile in the most natural and physiological way. It enables treatment of occlusal disorders and elimination of single abnormalities. Frequently, it is the first step to the improvement of the aesthetic qualities of the whole face. It can also be an introduction to further prosthetic, implant, or periodontal treatment. Correct orthodontic treatment prevents parodontal diseases by eliminating teeth overload and jammed teeth.

Correct teeth alignment facilitates oral cavity hygiene, reducing the susceptibility to dental caries and accumulation of tartar and dark deposits.

Orthodontic treatment definitely improves speech and results in a nice and aesthetic smile.

It is worth emphasizing that orthodontic treatment means not only the application of orthodontic appliances. At present, it is a type of health prevention, which makes it possible for patients to keep a healthy and beautiful smile for a long time.

Orthodontic treatment is performed in stages and consists of the following:

STAGE 1

Orthodontic consultations consisting in an interview with a patient, internal and external examination, radiograms, and taking suitable impressions.

STAGE 2

Determination of a treatment plan depending on the results of the consultations.

STAGE 3

Regular checks during the treatment period, which should be scheduled once each 4-8 weeks in the event of a fixed appliance and once each 8-10 weeks in the event of a removable appliance.

STAGE 4

Appointment with an orthodontist during which the appliance is removed.

STAGE 5

Retaining treatment which ensures the maintenance of treatment results. A failure to follow recommendations of the orthodontist may cause that the teeth will move or even return to their positions from before the treatment.

The duration of the retaining stage depends on the type of the occlusal disorder. On average, it lasts for 3 years in children and teenagers and 5 years in adults. In adults, it is often necessary to apply the retaining treatment until the end of their life. Minute moves of teeth are acceptable and even necessary in terms of the teeth’s natural tendency to a maximum contact. After the removal of a fixed appliance, the retaining treatment should be applied 24h a day with breaks for meals and oral cavity hygiene. Then, the treatment must be continued for shorter periods according to the recommendations of the orthodontist for the next 12 months. This enables permanent reconstruction of tissues supporting teeth. As a principle, after the removal of a fixed appliance, a removable retainer is made for the upper teeth and a retainer wire is fixed to the lingual surface of the lower front teeth.

RESEARCH

Aesthetic Dent team led by Katarzynę Sporniak-Tutak is involved in a multicenter research program which brings together the most prestigious research centers from Switzerland, Austria, USA and Spain. Aesthetic  Dent Clinic is currently the only center in Poland, which conducts research on such a large scale in the field of short implants. The aim of the study is a long-term (5.5 years) functional assessment of short- implant in bony compromised conditions.

Thanks to changing technology of implants production to increase bone-to-implant contact, we investigate efficacy of short implants compared to standard dimensions implants. Based on the preliminary results, we expect many positive effects of the treatment. These include: reducing the need for CT scans, irradiation decrease, limitation and reduction of peri-implant advanced procedures such as bone grafting or bone reconstruction procedures. Also abridgement of treatment time and associated costs. Short implants can also be safely used in patients with systemic diseases that would hinder the process of surgery and healing.
